The Czechs: 1948 – How the Communist Party seized power

February 1948. The big moment for Prime Minister Klement Gottwald. Twelve democratic Government ministers resign in the expectation that Gottwald will fall and President Beneš will appoint an interim Caretaker Government that will lead the country to early elections, in which the Communists would most certainly not win. Within just a few critical days this tactical manoeuvre shows itself to be sheer political stupidity and a gross underrating of the opponent.
